  Gon Freecss, nella foresta attorno a casa sua, incontra un giovane hunter di nome Kaito, dal quale rimane molto
colpito. Egli racconta a Gon che è in viaggio per completare la prova finale del suo addestramento da Hunter che
consiste nel trovare e raggiungere il suo maestro. Il ragazzo spiega a Gon che il suo maestro è il più grande
Hunter del mondo e, da numerosi indizi nel racconto, egli capisce che quel maestro è, in realtà, il suo
sconosciuto padre, del quale non ha mai avuto notizie, anche perché sua zia Mito gliele ha sempre negate. Il giovane,
prima di partire, regala a Gon una licenza di Hunter, che si scoprirà essere appartenuta a suo padre. Scoperta
finalmente una traccia verso il padre, Gon decide, contro il parere della zia Mito, di partecipare all’esame
annuale per diventare anch'egli un Hunter nella speranza di ritrovarlo.
  
  Imbarcatosi sulla nave che
l’avrebbe portato sul luogo dove si sarebbe svolto l’esame, Gon conosce dei giovani aspiranti Hunter come
lui, che diventeranno i suoi migliori amici: Leorio, desideroso di guadagnare soldi per poter svolgere la sua
professione di medico chirurgo, e Kurapika (Curarpikt), che sta svolgendo l'esame per poter vendicare lo sterminio del
suo clan. Proprio la nave si rivelerà essere la prima selezione dei canditati all’esame, che tutti e tre
passano. Giunti al porto di Dorè, il capitano della nave consiglia a Gon di raggiungere un cipresso alto, che sarebbe
la via più sicura per arrivare al luogo segreto dell'esame. Durante il loro tragitto, vengono messi alla prova dal
quiz "a doppia scelta", un altro test d'ammissione all'esame. Tutti e tre passeranno di nuovo, grazie all'intuito e
all'intelligenza di Kurapika. Giunti al cipresso, dove li aspettano una coppia di Navigatori, responsabili di
selezionare gli esaminanti e guidarli fino al luogo dell'esame, vengono attaccati da una bestia mutaforma di chiamata
Kiriko, che ferisce i navigatori e scappa nella foresta circostante inseguito da Gon e Kurapika, mentre Leorio rimane a
curare uno dei Navigatori. Successivamente, grazie soprattutto alle straordinarie capacità di Gon, i tre scoprono che
era tutta una messinscena per metterli alla prova. Infatti, i Kiriko erano quattro, due dei quali sono i Navigatori, che
porteranno i tre al luogo dell'esame che si svolgerà a Zapan City.

  Twelve
years prior to the start of the story, Ging Freecss left his infant son, Gon, with Gon's aunt, Mito, on Whale Island.
Gon, who was told all his life that both his parents were dead, finds out from Ging's apprentice, Kite, that his father
is still alive and has since become an accomplished Hunter. Hunters are licensed, elite members of humanity who are
capable of tracking down secret treasures, rare beasts, or even other individuals. Gon leaves his home to become a
Hunter like his father by taking the Hunter Examination, a series of brutal tests involving skill, survival, and
teamwork. During the exam, Gon meets and eventually befriends three of the other applicants: Kurapika, the last
remaining member of the Kurta clan whom wishes to become a Hunter in order to avenge his clan and recover their
scarlet-glowing eyes, plucked from their corpses by a band of thieves known as the Phantom Troupe; Leorio, a prospective
physician who, in order to pay for medical school, desires the financial benefits Hunters receive; and Killua Zoldyck,
another twelve-year-old boy who has left his former life as a member of the world's most notorious assassin family.
Among many other examinees, Gon continuously encounters Hisoka, a mysterious and deadly conjurer who takes an interest
in Gon. The Final Phase of the Hunter Exam sees Gon passing the official part of the exam in anticlimax and Killua
failing after killing another applicant out of frustration. However, it is then revealed that one more secret task is
required of the applicants for them to pass the Exam. The trio then travels to Killua's home estate in order to retrieve
the boy from his overbearing family.
